I'm done with Step 1 in building the new Magpie residence. The walls are all up, and it has a roof.

This is the front, which I've tried to spruce up a little with canopies. It will probably look a lot better when it gets a more detailed siding. For now it just has something from the base-game slapped on. I've found a pretty good one that is grey brick with white borders, but I'm looking for a good sandstone siding too. That would probably look more authentic.

Here's the back, with a couple of base-game objects for scale. It's a big house! :D The swimming pool will be right outside the left wing.

It's too large to fit into one single overhead shot, but here you see the layout of the central building and one wing. It's symmertrically laid out, and both floors are practically identical, so in all there are a whooping 32 bedrooms. Most of the ones on the second floor will be used for other things, though.

The dining room can fit 24 Sims. x) I'm looking for 5-tile dining tables, though. The mod I use "only" allows cooking 20 serving at the time, but it never happens that everyone's hungry at once. The large room on the left will be a huuuuge kitchen with two fridges, two ovens, etc. On the other side of the dining room, they'll have the family room.

The attick can be developed, but I hope for Goodness' sake that won't be necssary!

Thanks! :-)

I used to have a habit of building hiiiiiigh! 4 stories was not unusual. These days I try to find real floorplans that resemble what I had in mind, so my houses are gradually getting better.

Try googling for floor plans. There are some relatively simple ones freely available that make for good family homes. Try this one, for exemple. It's basically just a rectangle, but it tells you where to put the stairs, where the kitchen should be, etc. I've discovered that the Sims' lives become so much more organized when you leave that sort of thing to experts.

It's not difficult. You use the "page up" key to go to the next floor. Then you simply start dragging new walls by placing the wall tool on top of the first floor. It's easier to see if you put flooring down first, which you do by dragging it over the transparent grid, just like you'd do on the ground. Put the wall tool on a corner and start dragging.

"Page down" takes you downstairs again. "Home" puts walls up, "end" cuts them away. There are icons for it on the user panel as well, but I prefer using keys.

I love how it looks like a mansion and a fortress too. It's miraculous that you managed to get that many rooms! The hallways are probably going to be dark, but hopefully you won't have to take many pictures there.

I use this dining table for the Ducklings. You can put as many of them together as you need, and it's a nice-looking table. The only drawback is that its shadow looks like train tracks. Somebody posted a pic of what the shadow looks like in the comments. But with the right carpet or rug underneath it, the shadow blends in. Like so.

Awwww, thanks! That's the exact kind of thing I've been looking all over for! I found another one, but it was two tiles wide, and that wouldn't fit very well.

I think the "fortress" look will probably be less noticable when I put in the huge ornamental windows I've downloaded. The real siding is a light grey with white, so that should also give it a friendlier look. If it was up to Weedy, she'd keep it exactly the way it is now, only with a door added, but she's not in charge of the construction. :P
